Sarah Stevenson and Curt Bradley announced "Poverty, Equity and
Education: A Critical Look at CMS Student Assignment, Monday, Jan. 17,
2-4 p.m. at the Afro-American Cultural Center, 401 N. Myers St. off
Seventh Street in downtown Charlotte. Presenters include the Rev. Tonyia
Rawls of Unity Fellowship Church, and Dr. Jack Boger, deputy director of
the UNC Center for Civil Rights in Chapel Hill and co-author of a recent
report on socioeconomic issues in CMS student assignment. Following
presentations, there will be breakout sessions at which students will
respond to the presenters' comments. A panel discussion will conclude
the afternoon.
"We are doing this because we want to support what (CMS Supt.) Dr.
Pughsley will present to the school board... because Dr. Pughsley
doesn't have the support of the board on capping poverty in the
schools," Stevenson said. "We need all of you there." Sponsors are

Charlotte Housing Authority CEO Charles Woodyard announced that in the
next three or four months the housing agency would be introducing a new
program
"that makes public housing transitional and not generational.... We may
need to dry run this at the Forum," Woodyard said. "It may knock the
community back a bit."

N.C. Senator-elect Malcolm Graham invited all to attend his oath of
office ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 23, at 4 p.m. at the J.A. Grimes Lounge
at Johnson C. Smith University, 1000 Beatties Ford Road. RSVP to Ervin

Dr. Gyasi Foluke said the Mobilization Steering Committee, formed after
Bill James' "moral sewer" remarks, continues to meet Thursdays at 6:30
p.m. at Little Rock AME Zion Church, 401 N. McDowell St. adjacent to the
Afro-American Cultural Center, which is its former sanctuary.

Rodney Moore announced that the NAACP would install its new officers
Sunday, Jan. 23, at 3 p.m. at Greater Providence Baptist Church, 2000
Milton Road. New branch president is Kenneth White, succeeding Yvonne
Pettis, who continues to serve on the executive committee.

Mary Brooks announced that the trophies won by West Charlotte High
School in New Orleans at the Sugar Bowl "are gorgeous" and are on
display at the school office.

Lucy Bush announced that Friendship Trays needs volunteers to support
routes for hundreds of people on a waiting list for nutritious,
home-delivered meals. To volunteer, call 704-333-9229.

Blanche Penn announced that the school board meets tonight, Tuesday,
Jan. 11, at the Government Center at 6 p.m. She said she would speak
again on suspension and dress code issues.

Neil Carroll from the Parks & Recreation Dept. announced that a newly
renovated Dowd House would be ready for programming in March. The 1878
farmhouse became administrative headquarters for Camp Greene, a
6,000-acre World War I infantry training installation, then on
Charlotte's edge. The house is at 2216 Monument Avenue, off Wilkinson
Boulevard near Remount Road.

Neil Carroll also announced that phase one construction of the Druid
Hills neighborhood park would begin this summer.

Carol Bates from the Urban League announced that the Urban League is
pursuing Operation Slam Dunk, an employability and life skills training
program. Participants are dropouts or offenders age 18-21, who are paid
throughout the training, are placed in internships, then placed in jobs
upon completion. Mentors are provided by faith-based organizations. For
further information or to offer job situations for program graduates,

Ahmad Daniels sent in an announcement of "Men to Men---Heart to Heart",
a facilitated discussion of "issues that are often viewed as too
personal for public discourse. These discussions are particularly
advantageous for the man who has experienced separation from a
meaningful relationship or marital divorce." The series begins Thursday,
Jan. 27 at 7:30-9 p.m. at the Afro-American Cultural Center, 401 N.

Convenor Deacon Jones asked that participants at next week's Forum
present themselves promptly at 8 a.m. so that Dr. Foluke will have time
for his presentation on solutions.

Wednesday, Jan. 19, with a call for a reparations conference "that
refutes what Bill James has pointed out."

Parks and Recreation Commission Chair William Chandler announced that
the commission needed a representative from Smallwood or Rozzelles Ferry
to sit on an advisory committee. Proposals for the area are being
considered, but will not be addressed until a neighborhood
representative can be involved in the discussion, he said.

Deacon Jones announced that he had extended to newly appointed District
4 City Council member Greg Phipps an invitation to particpate in the
Forum any time.

Parks and Recreation Department General Manager Sherry Wilson announced
that the commission meets the fourth Mondays at 6 p.m., with meeting
places rotating around the city. She asked for nominations of people
willing to serve on parks advisory councils.

Chris Wilson offered Malcolm Graham's thanks to those who participated
in his swearing-in ceremony. Wilson said Graham was in Raleigh, and had
been elected secretary of the N.C. Black Legislative Caucus, and that he
had been nominated to be freshman class president of the N.C. Senate.
Wilson asked that Forum members keep Graham and his family in their
prayers.

Rodney Moore announced that the NAACP would have its first meeting under
new president Ken White this Thursday, Jan. 27, at Weeping Willow AME
Zion Church, 2220 Milton Road, at 7 p.m.

Deacon Jones announced that City Council approved about $800,000 in
loans and grants for the renovation of Wallace Townhomes in Grier
Heights. He said Chris Wilson is part of the management crew that will
handle the renovation.

Dr. Vernon Herron recommended keeping eyes on Chris Wilson. "He's on his
way up. And when it happens I want to come back and say I told you so."

Richard McElrath announced that the Board of Education would meet
tonight, Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 6 p.m. at the Government Center Meeting
Chamber, and asked people to come out in support of People United for
Education.

and fourth Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. at the West Charlotte Recreation
